Surviving the content management jungle
Life was quite simple until a few years ago.
The target audience of any web site was simply, everyone!
And content usually managed itself.
But the target audience in today's scenario is a discerning user with
definite tastes and preferences.
And content management is a jungle today!
Consequently, getting lost in the content can be a common occurrence indeed!
The only content type that existed a few years ago was the static HTML
page and this page was managed by a web master who made manual changes
whenever necessary. But, today, the user dictates what kind of content
goes into a web page, and the types of content are unquestionably, far
too many. Content types have multiplied and include many media types and
a host of applications that come from a number of sources and are driven
to multiple destinations.
The static HTML page required only a Web master and no one else to maintain
the site. But, today, with content on a web site being updated everyday
and millions of authors writing content and equally large number of resources
designing and adding content to pages, managing content has moved into
a completely different realm today.
Sites that contain static HTML pages require manual maintenance one page
at a time, and prove to be an unnecessary waste of time. Most sites need
to be dynamic today, providing user-relevant information rapidly and efficiently.
Personalized and user-specific content is the norm of any web site today.
What does a content management system do? What it does in its simplest
terms is self-service. In its most complex description, it offers enterprise
and global collaboration. This range of services is what makes the spectrum
of content management solutions (CMS) boggling.
Web sites can be of the online brochure type or the multiple-source,
multiple destination type. And, each one of them may require certain specific
requirements from a CMS. Matching various CMS solutions to the needs of
a particular web site and organization is not what we intend to do here;
instead we shall focus on the must-haves of any CMS worth its note. Mapping
your needs to these solutions becomes an easy chore then.
Web content management is a cool tool that creates, deploys, manages
and tracks content. Creating to archiving processes all managed in a manner
that reduces operation costs and risks and improves the overall efficiency
of the organization.
