Enabling Business Intelligence through an Intranet
-- Anjana Srikanth
A fast lane to corporate information - an Intranet is a site based on
Internet technology that runs on internal servers within an organization.
Users can access data through a standard web browser. What kind of data?
Any information that is a part of business intelligence - financial reports,
press releases, software user guides, products, patents, customers and
market trends.
Intranets are powerful tools that improve communication in an organization
and also cut down costs tremendously. Information gaps, redundant and
outdated content and the resulting chaos existing between divisions in
organizations can be eliminated when an Intranet is implemented. It is
a Knowledge Management tool that encourages users to feed back into the
system what they have learned.
"Hot Seat - Hiring, Firing and Inspiring - Sim Manager", an
article written by Polly Schneider Traylor for CIO Magazine on April 1,
2000 showcases how Motorola, Inc. implemented a web-based skills assessment
e-learning program that runs on their Intranet and thus is accessible
to Motorola managers all over the world.
Since laying-off workers and closing plants last year Motorola has embarked
on a skills training project for its 30,000 managers spread worldwide.
E-learning using the Intranet saved money and also helped their managers
adopt a global perspective.
Motorola's Intranet implemented in April 1997 in Texas aimed at integrating
information between 1,500 employees (refer article: Motorola's Semi-Conductor
products CIO Magazine dated November 15, 1998). Again in 1999, their e-strategy
took on mammoth projections when they built a portal connecting 130,000
people in 50 countries (http://www.cio.com/archive/111598/smart.html
and http://www.cio.com/archive/040100/intranet.html).
It helped them access information across the company and even execute
multi-departmental tasks like travel plans.
